According to results of the OPTIMA trial, which followed more than 4,400 patients with newly diagnosed breast cancer across the U.K., Norway, Sweden, Australia, New Zealand and Thailand, new genomic testing may enable millions of women with breast cancer to safely forgo chemotherapy.

The trial, led by University College London, used a genomic test called Prosigna, made by diagnostics company Veracyte, which analyzes the activity of 50 genes in tumor tissue to determine a patient's risk of breast cancer returning and help guide treatment decisions.

Of the 4,429 trial participants aged 40 and older, 68% received a low Prosigna score. Five years after treatment, 93.6% of those who received hormone therapy alone were alive and cancer-free, compared with 94.8% of those who also received chemotherapy.

Statistical analysis showed that, at most, only 2% of patients with a low Prosigna score would benefit from chemotherapy, leading researchers to estimate that more than 5,000 National Health Service (NHS) patients a year could avoid the treatment as a result of the trial.
