Documents Case: Trump Barred from Disclosing Evidence

The Facts

On Monday, US Magistrate Judge Bruce Reinhart issued a protective order barring former US Pres. Donald Trump and co-defendant Walt Nauta from publicly sharing any evidence or sensitive information discussed in his classified documents case.

The ruling — which also blocks their access to evidence without the supervision of a lawyer — applies to discovery materials, as well as any information derived from them. Violations could result in contempt of court, or in civil or criminal sanctions.

According to the order, the defendants can access the discovery materials under the "direct supervision of defense counsel or a member of the defense counsel's staff."

The ruling comes after prosecutors claimed releasing the confidential discovery materials could compromise ongoing investigations and identify uncharged individuals.

Earlier this month, Trump became the first former US president to face federal charges when he was indicted on 37 felony counts for allegedly mishandling classified documents recovered from his Mar-a-Lago property.

Most of these charges relate to the unauthorized retention of national secrets under the World War I-era Espionage Act, including 21 documents marked "top secret," nine marked "secret," and one without a classification stamp but containing restricted military information.

While the former president's continual excuses sound like raving hysterics, he will soon realize that the rule of law does apply to him. It's extremely clear that Trump took classified documents and refused to return them — opportunities to escape responsibility are becoming ever scarcer.

Every president since Reagan has been found to possess classified documents, yet none of those former officials are being attacked and investigated like Trump.
